On August 29, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Archbishop O’Brien as Grand Master of the Equestrian Order (Knights) of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, sending him to Rome. He will serve in Baltimore as apostolic administrator until his successor is installed. < more info >
His Excellency Edwin Frederick O’Brien is the 15th Archbishop of Baltimore. On July 12, 2007, his appointment as Archbishop of Baltimore by Pope Benedict XVI was announced, and was formally installed as 15th Ordinary of the nation's oldest See on October 1 in ceremonies at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen.
On January 6, 2012, he was named a cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI. At a February 18 ceremony, he officially becomes a cardinal. He will return in March to lead his first Mass as cardinal at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen.
He is the fourth bishop in the 223-year history of the archdiocese to be so honored.
Prior to his assignment in Baltimore, he was Archbishop of The Archdiocese for the Military Services of the United States from 1997 until 2007.

Edwin Frederick O’Brien was born April 8, 1939 in the Bronx, New York, son of Edwin Frederick O’Brien, Sr. and Mary Winifred O’Brien. He was one of three children, including brothers Ken and Tom (now both deceased).
