What is the Eucharist?

Christ's great homily on the Eucharist

John 6:24-35

In this Gospel passage, Jesus says, "Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life." In other words: Work hard to obtain whatever will nourish your soul and sustain you past death into eternity.

"This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent." Work hard to get rid of every doubt and distrust that interferes with your belief in Christ and his words and his ways.

"The bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." We receive this bread of life at every Mass.

"The Church draws her life from the Eucharist," wrote Pope John Paul II in the first line of the encyclical Ecclesia de Eucharistia. We're on a journey to heaven, and the presence of Christ in the Eucharist helps us stay on course. From this simple fact we can base our hope, with confidence, of reaching heaven.

John 6:41-51
