The Cathedral Crypt

The crypt is the mausoleum under the main floor of the Church. The word is taken from the Greek verb "to hide."

This crypt is reserved for Archbishops of Baltimore and the auxiliary bishops who assist the Archbishop.

Currently, there are five people buried in the crypt:
Lawrence Cardinal Sheehan, Archbishop of Baltimore, from 1961 until he retired in 1974. He died in 1984.
Archbishop Francis Keough, Archbishop of Baltimore from 1947 until his death in 1961.
Auxiliary Bishop Jerome Sebastian, the bishop who consecrated the Cathedral in 1959. He served as auxiliary bishop from 1954 until his death in 1960.
Auxiliary Bishop T. Austin Murphy, a well-loved and remembered man who served as auxiliary bishop from 1962 until his death in 1991.
Auxiliary Bishop P. Francis Murphy, who died in 1999. He served as secretary to the late Cardinal Sheehan, who later ordained him a bishop. Bishop Murphy served the Archdiocese as the Western Vicar.
