Our engineering consultants from Wiss, Janney have
nearly completed their study and testing of the roof, roof membrane,
related structures such as drains, paving and stairs, the arches,
windows and the Cathedral "skin."
Our Facilities and Maintenance Committee has been involved in the
process, as has the Archdiocese. We expect a contract to be signed
over the next week to schedule the repair and paving of the roads and
parking lot. The permanent arch/interior roof access system has
been designed and is at the contractor for review and pricing.
A landscape architect is reviewing the stone paving and steps in
preparation for repair and contract award. A contractor is
scheduled this week to remove several roof capstones to check their
integrity. That will complete the study of the entire roof.
Once complete, Wiss, Janney will work with the roofing contractors to
determine the best repair for the roofing system.
Wiss, Janney has already designed a preliminary repair for the arch
stress problem and will finalize that plan once the last of the
roof-related testing is complete. Repairing the arches and roof
involves access, stabilizing the concrete roof which overlays the
arches, as well as the roof membrane and the drain system.
We expect the repair work to commence sometime over the next several
months. We will keep you posted as to the progress. We
appreciate your patience. These are complex architectural and
engineering problems related to the original design and construction and
we want to make sure they are repaired completely and properly.
We anticipate the repairs will take a number of months to complete.
Thank you for your patience.
We
give thanks to all involved in these important projects and look forward
to welcoming all parishioners and visitors.
