Adopt-A-Family for Christmas
Beginning in September, for every Advent season, the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen has sponsored the Adopt-A-Family program for many years. Needy families are adopted from a list of needy families at our Sister Parish, Immaculate Conception, on Mosher Street in the inner city; many were single parent households or grandparents raising grandchildren. Countless parishioners and friends have adopted families in need at Christmas by giving them food and gifts. In giving generously of their time and money they have brought great joy to the recipients -- and great joy to themselves.
Thank You! The Cathedral Adopt a Family Program in 2011 was a huge success thanks to the participation of 165 parishioners, friends, co-workers and their families. We were able to provide Christmas gifts and dinner to 120 families and almost $7000 in financial support to Immaculate Conception Parish. Immaculate Conception and it's sister parish St. Cecelia do tremendous outreach to their community of working class poor in the inner city and it was these families we were able to help with the Adopt A Family Program. Brother William Stover, director of outreach at IC, has asked me to convey his Christmas blessings to all who gave so generously to support IC in their efforts. I have received countless expressions of gratitude from many CMOQ families for allowing them to participate in this wonderful program that helped them demonstrate the true meaning of Christmas to their children. It is truly in giving that we receive! ~ Willis Gunther, Adopt A Family Coordinator.
