Our Daily Bread

"Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine,
you did for me." (Matthew 25:40)

This ministry is for everyone! Let's get cooking to help benefit Our Daily Bread Employment Center, a Catholic Charities program supporting the Baltimore hungry. On the first Tuesday of every month, the Cathedral is responsible for making and serving lunch at Our Daily Bread.

Fun fellowship opportunity:
Cathedral's Casserole Club seeks Volunteers!
Adults and children of the Cathdral are invited to come to the church undercroft on the Sunday prior to the first Tuesday of the month at 10:30 a.m. (following the 9:15 Mass) with the following casserole ingredients:

Utensils and pans will be provided. Together, we enjoy fellowship and the presence of the Holy Spirit as we prepare the casseroles - and further supplement our regular monthly contribution to ODBEC. The pans will then be stored in a donated freezer until delivery.

For further info, please contact William Macsherry at 410-903-7246.

Or make the casserole at home
A few minutes of your time once a month can make a difference to our hungry brothers and sisters. We need more volunteers to make casseroles and/or help us serve at Our Daily Bread - once a month.

Make the easy, no-bake casserole (open the recipe to print it). It must be delivered frozen. The pans and recipe can be found at the entrances to the Cathedral the week before we serve. The casserole does not require cooking, making it easy for children to help prepare, so it's a great family activity. Drop off the casserole 8:30-9:00am on the first Tuesday of the month, in the upper side lot, up near the front of the cathedral.

Help serve the lunch
If your schedule permits, you are also invited to carpool from the Cathedral to Our Daily Bread, 725 Fallsway. Volunteers meet on the first Tuesday of the month, at the upper side lot close to the front of the cathedral, for departure at 9:00am. At ODB, you will serve lunch from 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM to 750 of our hungry brothers and sisters. Volunteers arrive back at CMOQ about 1:15pm.

To serve at Our Daily Bread without adult supervision, youth must be 15 or older; 13 and 14 year old volunteers require adult supervision. Many volunteer servers are seniors who find their work very rewarding. If you volunteer at Our Daily Bread, wear jeans or pants, and a t-shirt or sweatshirt. Please do not wear shorts.

To volunteer for delivering the casseroles and serving lunch, contact the Service Committee of the Pastoral Council.

More about Our Daily Bread:
ODB is committed to serving the needs of our most vulnerable sisters and brothers. It is through the generous giving of volunteers that hospitality, friendship and two meals a day are provided, nourishing both body and spirit.

ODB serves an average of 770 guests, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Guests include men, women, and children of all ages. Welfare cuts and a declining economy have increased the numbers of people seeking meals.

Between 30 and 35 volunteers help serve the meal every day. Volunteers range in age from 13 to 95, and represent all religions and races. Some volunteers are regulars, volunteering once a week or once a month. Most helpers are sporadic, scheduling a day to volunteer when possible.

Our Daily Bread Mission:
Our Daily Bread is a place where all are welcomed, where people whose lives are burdened by the hardships of the human condition are served with dignity and reverence. Volunteers serve with a passion and love for our brothers and sisters, and meet their needs for food, resources, direction and the building up of the human spirit.

Other Volunteer Needs at Our Daily Bread

Pick-Up and Delivery
Often, due to a lack of vehicle and driver, ODB cannot take advantage of donations of breads and desserts offered by many local stores. Drivers in Baltimore and the vicinity are always needed. Deliveries are accepted between the hours of 8am and 3pm, every day.

Decorations
Seasonal decorations for the dining room are always welcome. This is a great project for children who are too young to volunteer.

Special Events
There are several events during the year that require additional volunteers.

To volunteer for these activities, please contact
the Service Committee of the Pastoral Council.
