 Marriage Preparation: Sponsor Couple Program

The Sponsor Couple Marriage Preparation Program uses "like-to-like" ministry to help prepare engaged couples increase their knowledge and awareness of each other’s values and attitudes as well as improve their communication skills, problem-solving abilities, appreciation of human sexuality, and the expression of their shared spirituality.

This offers much benefit to engaged couples, due to the modeling relationship they experience with their Sponsor Couple. The Sponsor Couple benefits by continued insight into their own marriage, derived from sharing their life’s experiences and love’s responses. The parish, in turn, benefits by offering personalized, ongoing ministry through its sponsor couples to those entering a new communal experience of parish life in the Sacrament of Marriage.

WHEN THE MINISTRY MEETS: Ideally, Sponsor Couples will be matched with an Engaged Couple twice per year.

VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT: All Sponsor Couples are required to complete an Archdiocesan Training Program that generally consists of 6 hours of training. The time the Sponsor Couple spends in training with the Engaged Couple will vary, but it usually consists of 5 sessions, each lasting approximately 2 hours per session.

WHEN VOLUNTEERS CAN JOIN: This is a special ministry for which married couples need to seriously discern and pray about together before they commit. Every year, Cathedral staff members are asked to submit names of those couples who demonstrate a loving witness to the value and importance of a Catholic Christian marriage. These couples are personally invited to attend an "Information Session" to learn about the Sponsor Couple Program and their potential involvement in it.

VOLUNTEER PROFILE/SPECIAL SKILLS: The couple must have a valid Catholic marriage; solid, open communication, willingness to share marriage with others, good sense of humor, living witness to value and importance of a Christian marriage, respect and exercise the rule of confidentiality.
