Paul & His Letters - Fr. Bill Burton **Wednesday Date

Wednesday, May 18 at 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

In our four meetings we will review a biography of Paul and the techniques of ancient letter writing that Paul uses in his letters.  We will then examine seven of Paul’s letters - the seven that all accept as genuinely written by Paul.
These are: Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Philippians, 1 Thessalonians and Philemon.

Where it is possible, we will try to understand the nature of the churches to which Paul wrote the letters and the nature of the problems Paul addresses in his letters.

His letter to the important churches in Rome will be the first we consider because it is pre-eminent among his letters.  This is the most “theological” of Paul’s letters.  This is the only letter Paul wrote to a Christian community that he did not establish and in it Paul tries to explain to the Roman Christians the gospel he preaches and his understanding of life in Christ.

With some of these Paul’s theological themes, we can then better understand much of his other six letters.
Please join us as together we try to deepen our understanding and appreciation for this most prominent of earliest Christians, that follower of Christ who is often called “the second founder of Christianity.”  We will meet on Monday, 25 April, Monday 2 May, Monday 9 May and WEDNESDAY, 18 May.
