Africa is Calling Thee

Concerts are a great opportunity to discover music of faith that does not fit in the context of Mass. They are also opportunities for us to invite other groups to offer music that we may not be able to do with our own resources. During our Homecoming celebration next weekend, we will welcome The Community Concert Choir of Baltimore for a concert entitled “Africa Is Calling Thee.” The concert will take place in the cathedral on Sunday, November 12 at 4pm.

Founded by Marco K. Merrick in 2010, The Community Concert Choir was established to help preserve the musical heritage of the Black Church. With over 130 members, the choir presents programs of Negro Spirituals, Western European hymns and anthems, as well as Gospel music. The choir has crossed denominational lines and communities to share this rich music in numerous churches and venues in the Baltimore area. Annually, the choir presents three signature concerts. We are proud to host their fall concert in conjunction with our Homecoming celebration.

Also appearing on the concert will be the Cardinal Shehan School Choir. After a rehearsal video went viral, they were invited to perform on Good Morning America. With several hundred thousand views on YouTube now, we are very thankful that The Community Concert Choir had already engaged them for this concert. Be sure to come early to get a good seat for what promises to be a spectacular concert.

While nurturing our faith, concerts can also be an opportunity to serve. The musicians will serve the audience, but the event can also serve to support other causes. The Alpha Phi Alpha, Fraternity Inc. – Delta Lambda Chapter presents this concert and the reception to follow as a fundraiser to benefit the educational activities programs that they offer for youth. These programs develop character, promote academic excellence, and service to the community in young men. To date they have mentored and prepared almost 300 young men to enter the college or university of their choice and have awarded over $376,000 in scholarships and book stipends. A free-will offering for their scholarship fund will take place during the concert.

Hear the call of Africa! Come enjoy the music of The Community Concert Choir of Baltimore and the Cardinal Shehan School Choir next Sunday, November 12, at 4pm.
