Fr. Bianco's Message for the Week: August 20, 2021

Dear Cathedral Parishioners,

Happy feast day!

This Sunday, August 22nd, is our patronal feast, the Queenship of Mary.  Last weekend we celebrated Mary’s assumption, body and soul, into heaven and this weekend is the culmination of that event as she is crowned Queen of Heaven and Earth.

Since Jesus is a king, and since He was conceived in the womb of Mary, and since in ancient Israel the mother of a king was always considered a queen, Mary becomes Queen of Heaven and Earth.  In fact, she becomes the Queen Mother, a person who, in the Kingdom of David, exercised power and who was very influential in decision making.  The mother of a king held an official position in the royal court, in which she shared in her son’s reign and served as an advocate for the people and as a counselor for her son.

This describes Mary’s role with her Son perfectly.  She advocates for us as our spiritual Mother and obtains graces for us from Jesus.  As we open our hearts in prayer, we ask Mary to intercede for us, our families, and this wonderful parish and school of the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen.  The more we pray with Mary, the more she will become the Queen of our hearts and souls.

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,
our life, our sweetness and our hope.
To you do we cry,
poor banished children of Eve.
To you do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious advocate,
your eyes of mercy toward us,
and after this, our exile,
show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving,
O sweet Virgin Mary.

May God bless you.

Father Louis A. Bianco
