Fr. Bianco's Message for the Week: March 25, 2022

Dear Cathedral Parishioners,

I am very happy to announce that Children’s Liturgy of the Word will be starting up again this Sunday at the 9:30 AM Mass. Many families have been asking for this ministry to return and we are finally prepared to offer it again. Children up to the 5th grade are invited at the beginning of Mass to proceed to the undercroft for a lesson on the readings. Those who are under the age of 5 years have the opportunity to participate in the nursery in an activity and songs that are age appropriate.

Last Friday evening we had a great turnout of parishioners for the annual Catholic Relief Services meal packing event. Next Friday, April 1st, we will have another opportunity to serve the underprivileged through our Painted Bowls event. This event is a fun opportunity for the whole family to create your own design on a bowl which will then be donated to St. Vincent de Paul of Baltimore's annual Empty Bowls fundraising event. The bowls that we paint will be fired in a kiln and then brought to the Empty Bowls event at the MD Fairgrounds on Sat. April 23rd to be auctioned.

The Grief Ministry Pantry is still looking for volunteers. Volunteers will purchase and deliver perishable food once every three months to the Grief Ministry Pantry that is housed in the basement of Holy Cross rectory in south Baltimore. After the food has been delivered, volunteers from the Catholic Community of South Baltimore combine the fresh food with canned goods into care packages. The Baltimore Police Department’s Homicide Survivor Advocates Unit picks up and delivers these care packages to grieving families who have recently lost a loved one to gun violence. If you are interested in volunteering as a “perishable food shopper” or simply want to donate without shopping, please contact Nora Collins at: [email protected]

The Maryland General Assembly has proposed several bills this legislative session to expand abortion. Most serious among them is a constitutional amendment that would enshrine abortion in Maryland’s Constitution. Please make your voice heard. As Pope Francis reminds us, “All life has inestimable value, even the weakest and most vulnerable, the sick, the old, the unborn and the poor…. they deserve the utmost reverence and respect.”
Sign up with the Catholic Advocacy Network: of the Maryland Catholic Conference. This is the best way to let our elected officials know that you oppose their efforts to expand abortion services in Maryland.

Pope Francis will consecrate Russia and Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary today, Friday, March 25th and has invited all bishops throughout the world to join him in this consecration. Accordingly, Archbishop Lori will celebrate our 5:30 PM Mass on Friday, March 25th and will pray the consecratory prayer in union with the Holy Father. All are invited to attend this Mass. Archbishop Lori is asking those not able to participate in the Mass to offer a Rosary that day for peace in Ukraine. I invite those who attend the 5:30 Mass to remain after Mass and join us in praying the Stations of the Cross for the peace and protection of the Ukrainian people. The Mass will not be broadcasted on TV, but it will be livestreamed on Youtube at

Also after the 7 AM and 5:30 PM Friday Masses, the "33 Days" DIY Retreat participants will be doing their personal consecration in the Lady Chapel.

The School of the Cathedral is offering its annual musical this weekend. Tickets for Matilda Jr. are on sale now and often sell out quickly. Show times are Friday, March 25 at 7:00 PM, Saturday, March 26 at 7:00 PM, and Sunday, March 27 at 3:00 PM. Please click here to purchase tickets:

May God bless you.

Annual Appeal for Catholic Ministries

So far we have raised $139,515 of our $250,000 goal (56%).

This year instead of our parish only receiving a portion of funds raised for the Appeal for Catholic Ministries, Cathedral will keep 100% of all donations up to $250,000. Any funds raised over our goal will support the many important ministries of the appeal.

The funds will go towards several projects that will benefit the entire Cathedral campus. For more details please visit our website. Thank you for your generous support!

Stations of the Cross & Simple Lenten Meal

Please consider volunteering to provide a meatless soup and/or bread to share for our simple Lenten meals after the Stations of the Cross on Fridays at 6:15 PM.

You can sign up on our website at www.cathedralofmary/news/simple-lenten-meals
