First Communion

About these Sacraments at Cathedral

2020-21 Update: This year will be a little different as we are employing a virtual learning model, for at least the fall. 1st Reconciliation/Communion candidates will need to have access to an electronic device so they can participate virtually on Sundays.  Parents will be asked to work with their child(ren) on the book at home.  This is not a perfect or ideal situation, but the Cathedral staff and the SSR catechists are working hard to make this a valuable experience for growing in the faith.  The 1st Reconciliation/Communion workshops will be in person.  We will be in touch with details about those when we issue the sign-ups for them.

Requirements: Every child must attend and complete religious education the grade level before the year of the sacrament. Those wishing to celebrate the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist must complete first grade religious education in order to celebrate the Sacraments in second grade.

Parent requirements: Parents are required to attend a meeting in the fall for these Sacraments so they can assist their children with this exciting time in their faith. We believe that the parents are primary catechist of our children. Parents are also expected to assist their children with home assignments throughout the year.

Timeline: Children are prepared from September to December for First Reconciliation (Penance), which is celebrated in December. From January to May, students are prepared for the First Eucharist Sacrament, which is celebrated in May.

About the preparation: During the year, children receive two eight-lesson booklets: one for First Reconciliation and one for First Eucharist. These booklets need to be completed before children celebrate the sacrament. There is also a workshop for each Sacrament that children must attend.
